Product Information

Herpes is a viral infection caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV).

Herpes is available in two main types: HSV-1, which often causes mouth herpes, and HSV-2, which primarily leads to genital herpes. These viruses can cause painful blisters and/or wounds and are easily transferred from person to person via saliva. Many people with herpes experience no symptoms which makes it difficult to diagnose without a test

Herpes Test FAQ

Herpes: Frequently asked questions

What can trigger herpes?

Herpes outbreaks can be triggered by various factors including stress, illness, fatigue, direct sunlight in the field of herpes, menstruation or immunosuppression. It varies from person to person what exactly triggers an outbreak.

How long is herpes in outbreak?

The length of a herpes outbreak may vary. A first-time outbreak typically lasts between 2-4 weeks, while subsequent outbreaks are often shorter, usually approx. 1 week. The symptoms can become less severe as time goes on.

Can you get rid of herpes?

Herpes is a lifelong infection and there is currently no cure for the virus. However, treatment with antiviral drugs can help deal with the symptoms, reduce the number of outbreaks and reduce the risk of transferring the virus to others.

How do you test if you have herpes and can you test for herpes without outbreaks?

One can test for herpes by taking a blood test which can detect antibodies against
the herpes virus. This herpes test method makes it possible to test for herpes without an outbreak. You can also get a herpes test by a PCR test of the liquid from the blisters if there is an outbreak.

  • What is herpes?

Herpes infects primarily through direct contact with herpes wounds, but the virus can also be transferred even when there are no visible wounds. There are two main types of herpes virus: herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2).

    1. HSV-1, which often causes oral herpes, known as mouth herpes, typically infects through mouth-to-mouth contact. It may include kisses, sharing of drinks or dining sets, or using the same toothbrush. HSV-1 can also be transferred to the genital area through oral-genital contact.
    2. HSV-2 is the type that most often causes genital herpes. This type infects mainly through sexual contact, inclusive vaginal, anal and oral sex. HSV-2 can be transferred even when the person does not have visible wounds or feels symptoms.

    Herpes Symptoms:

    Symptoms of Oral Herpes (HSV-1):

    1. Small blisters or wounds around the lips, mouth or face, often known as cold sores.
    2. Itching, burning sensation or pain around the mouth before the outbreak of blisters.
    3. Wounds can ooze and form crusts as they heal.
    4. In some cases, fever, swollen lymph nodes and sore throat, especially at the first outbreak.

    Symptoms of genital herpes (HSV-2):

    1. Small blisters or wounds in the genital area, buttocks or thighs.
    2. Wounds can cause pain, itching and discomfort, especially when they burst and turn into open wounds.
    3. Pain by urination.
    4. At the first outbreak, the symptoms may also include flu -like symptoms such as fever, headache and muscle pain.
    5. Raised lymph nodes in the groin area.

    Treatment of Herpes:

Treatment of herpes focuses on reducing the duration and severity of outbreaks. At the first outbreak of herpes genitalis, treatment with virus inhibitory medications such as Aciclovir, Valaciclovir or Famvir may be effective. These tablets taken over a period of 7-10 days can help shorten the duration of an outbreak.

For people with frequent outbreaks, for example 6-12 times a year, preventative treatment with these medicines is recommended. This type of preventative treatment is known to have minimal side effects and can be effective in reducing the frequency of outbreaks.

It is important to start treatment as soon as symptoms of a herpes outbreak are felt. Having a pack of medicine available or a prescription ready can therefore be advantageous. Generally, it is recommended to avoid sexual activity when there are visible outbreaks and always have sex with a condom to reduce the risk of infection. Good hand hygiene is also important to prevent the spread of the virus to other parts of the body, or to other people.

    Further information:

    • The first outbreak of herpes can be more serious and last longer than subsequent outbreaks.
    • After the first outbreak, the virus enters a latent phase where it remains in the body and can be reactivated, leading to new outbreaks. These later outbreaks are often less severe and lasts less time.
    • Some people experience regular outbreaks, while others rarely or never experience an outbreak after the first.

Herpes test – Effective test with results in 15 minutes

This herpes test is a useful tool for herpes screening when a herpes infection is suspected.

The herpes test is quick and easy to use and has a high reliability of 97.9%. The test is not intended as a self-test, but is CE-approved for professional use by healthcare personnel.

What causes the infection?

Herpes is a relatively common viral infection, primarily caused by either Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). HSV-1 often leads to cold sores around the mouth and lips, while HSV-2 is usually associated with genital herpes affecting the genital area.

Our herpes test provides results in 15 minutes and has been developed by health experts. It is ideal as a temporary screening test for recent herpes infection.

How is herpes transmitted?

Herpes is usually transmitted through direct contact with infected skin areas or mucous membranes. Transmission can occur during sexual contact, but also through sharing items such as drinking glasses or through kissing.

The virus remains in the body after infection and can flare up again, leading to recurrent outbreaks. Factors such as stress and a weakened immune response can also trigger recurrent outbreaks. In many cases, the initial outbreak can be more intense and last longer compared to subsequent outbreaks.

This herpes test can be used to provide a quick and reliable answer when there is doubt about herpes infection. The test is for professional use, just like our other STI tests, all of which provide rapid results in 10–15 minutes.
