Gonorrhea is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. It is a bacterial infection that is spread through vaginal, oral, or anal sex with a person infected with gonorrhea.

Gonorrhea can infect both men and women, but is most common among young people aged 15–24 years.

Annual gonorrhea testing is recommended for all sexually active individuals under 25 years of age. It is also recommended for sexually active older women and men with certain risk factors.

Risk factors for gonorrhea infection:

- Having multiple sexual partners
- Previous gonorrhea infection
- Having other STIs
- Having a sexual partner with an STI
- Not using condoms consistently or correctly

What to do if a gonorrhea test is positive?

If a patient tests positive for gonorrhea, there are several options for treatment of the infection. First-line treatment is a single injection of antibiotics. Gonorrhea can generally be treated by general practitioners, but can also be treated at venereology clinics.
