The three test parameters

  • Protein: If protein occurs in the urine, it will often be a sign of kidney infection. However, it may also occur by inflammation of the bladder or in the prostate or by bleeding in the urinary tract.

  • Nitrite: If nitrite is found in the urine, it is a classic sign of infection in the urinary tract. However, a negative test will not rule out infection as the amount of nitrate (which is converted to nitrite) and bacteria fluctuate.

  • Leukocytes: When identifying leukocytes in the urine, it will be a clear indicator of kidney and urinary tract infection. Often, theirs will be found in bacterial infection, but also occurs when there is no bacteria.

Identification of just one of the above test parameters will require more thorough examination.
